Bertolotti, M.I.; Verazay, G.A.; Abal, H.J..
A deterministic single-species bioeconomic model is developed in order to provide an integral fishery management. This model is structured by age, in order to simulate the effects of natural and fishing mortalities, with simple economic assumtions. Fishing mortality is estimated through the fishing effort expressed by fishing hours or by HP per fishing hours. Biological underfishing and overfishing are analyzed from the estimated economic equilibrium for period under study.

Distribution of economic benefits from the fisheries of Lake Victoria OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Odongkara, K.O.; Onyango, P.O..
The Lake Victoria fishery contributes immensely to the socio-economic development of the riparian states. The East African Community has designated the lake basin as an ‘economic growth zone’, with the potential to develop into a major economic region. The fisheries are vital in creating employment opportunities, mostly rural-based, thereby helping to reduce rural-urban migration. Fish is also a rich source of animal protein for human consumption and provides raw material (fishmeal) for processing animal feeds. The fish industry contributes to GDP and has continued to be an important source of foreign exchange earned from fish exports. Besides, the fish industry contributes to the national and local government revenues through levying of various taxes,...

Environmental influence on marine pelagic fish: Evidence from bioeconomic modelling OceanDocs
Agbesi, E.N..
Environmental factors other than fishing effort, contribute to influencing marine pelagic fish population dynamics and abundance. There is evidence from environmental modelling and bioeconomic analysis of the Ghanaian marine inshore pelagic fisheries. Ghana is a West African country and lies on the Greenwich Meridian. It is bordered at the South by the Gulf of Guinea. The official language of Ghana is English, but is surrounded by French speaking countries. The inshore fishery is a multi-specie, multi-fleet fishery, consisting of artisanal and inshore purse seine fleets. The coastal inhabitants depend mainly on the marine fisheries as source of employment and livelihood. Fisheries constitute 5% of Agriculture GDP. The two fisheries types in the inshore...

Bertolotti, M.I.; Pagani, A.N.; Hernandez, D.R.; Buono, J.J..
In order to increase knowledge about the ice chilling fleet and to explain the relationship between structural variables and yields, a simplified model was developed. The fleet was classified in three homogeneous strata. Stratum I includes the smallest ships, with a catch composition equal to that of the large coastal fishing vessels. The stratum yields decreased in 1997 and 1998. Strata II and III have common hake as the main target of catches. Yields of those strata showed a continuous decrease as of 1994/1995. Therefore, the species was replaced by other fish originally caught by other fleets. These two last strata are more vulnerable to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries.

OceanDocs
Errazti, E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Bertolotti, M.I.; Buono, J.J..
This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year...

ArchiMer
Le Guen, Jean-claude; Chevalier, Robert.
All considerations about halieutic stocks inevitably had to attain the recognition of relations which are established between the resource and its natural environment. These phenomenons are exposed in the first part. About consequences of human interventions, both of these aspects must be taken into account: the introduction of new species and fishing. Second part deals with the use of models in stock management.

Fisheries Economics in the Context of the Artisanal Fisheries of the Marine Sector in Tanzania OceanDocs
Mapunda, X.E..
The development of the small scale marine fisheries in Tanzania is influenced by conditions in the other sectors of the economy. The artisanal fisheries are particularly sensitive to the general conditions of the economy. The small scale fisheries sector (artisanal fisheries) plays a role that has devolved upon agriculture. Generally, the sector is characterised by underemployment, low incomes, retarded technology and low labour skills as a result of the dual nature of the economy. This paper outlines the major constraints hindering the development of the small scale fisheries of the marine sector in Tanzania and provides tentative development policies for the upgrading of artisanal fisheries through improvement of catch, distribution and marketing.

Fishing and poverty levels around Lake Victoria (Kenya) OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Omwega, R.N.; Lwenya, C..
Fishing is known to be one of the oldest occupations of mankind and in Lake Victoria (Kenya); it has been largely practiced at artisanal levels. Despite this, poverty amongst the fisher folk remains high. Why the fisher folk remain in perpetual poverty was the key research question for this study. Sampling was conducted on 12 landing beaches between June and August 2004. Data was obtained using survey questionnaires; personal interviews were made using open-ended questions and beach observations. Results from this study indicates that 179 fishers sampled earned an average income of Ksh. 107,063 each in a year with modal income of Ksh. 57,600 while in a day they earned an average income of Ksh. 518 each with modal income of Ksh. 200. Fishers perceived that...
